What is the ruling on one who says there were marital problems in the house of the Prophet, peace be upon him, without intending to disparage him, believing that this does not diminish his status, and does this imply a belittlement of the Mothers of the Believers, and is this statement considered apostasy, and how is repentance from it performed?
It must be known that the Prophet's house, peace and blessings be upon him, was the best and purest of homes. He was the best in companionship with his family and the most perfect in character. Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family." He was always cheerful, joking with his family and being gentle with them, and he raced with Aisha as a gesture of affection towards her.
What happens between spouses in terms of disagreements or disputes is natural, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his wives were not immune from that. The wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gathered in jealousy and demanded sustenance and clothing from him, which distressed him, so he swore to seclude himself from them for a month. Al-Bukhari narrated that one of the Mothers of the Believers broke a plate of food sent by another, whereupon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Your mother is jealous." Ibn Abbas also narrated from Umar that the Prophet's wives used to challenge him, and one of them would forsake him from day until night.
Therefore, saying that his house, peace and blessings be upon him, was not free from some of these occurrences, as long as it is not meant to diminish him or his household, is permissible. It may even be beneficial for someone who is afflicted in his home, so that he may follow the Prophet's example, peace and blessings be upon him, in dealing with such problems.
