The question

Which is better in terms of legal impermissibility (ḥurmah sharʿiyyah): working as a design engineer in a factory that produces fighter jet missiles and spare parts for cigarette manufacturing machines (with the possibility of avoiding work on cigarette parts), or in a company that produces bottles for soft drinks and exports quantities of them to foreign alcoholic beverage companies, knowing that there is an opportunity to return to the first job?

The answer

Working at the first company is permissible if you avoid assisting in cigarette production and are certain that the manufactured weapons will not be used to kill Muslims. At the second company, working is permissible if it is restricted to designing and manufacturing bottles intended for juices and similar products. However, participating in the manufacturing of bottles intended for alcoholic beverages is not permissible because it constitutes aiding in what is unlawful, as Allah the Almighty says: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." Manufacturing bottles designated for alcoholic beverages is forbidden, whereas manufacturing military equipment is not forbidden unless it is known that it will be used to attack Muslims. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed alcohol and those who aid in its production.
