Is it permissible to count the amount given as a loan to the wife's friend as fidya (expiatory payment) for the days the wife missed fasting due to illness?

If a wife breaks her fast in Ramadan due to an illness from which recovery is hoped, she is only required to make up the missed days (qada'). However, if her illness is chronic and recovery is not hoped for, she must feed one poor person for each day, and this expiation (fidyah) must be from her own money.

If she does not possess money, the expiation remains a debt upon her until she is able to pay it. If the husband wishes to donate money to her to pay the expiation, there is no harm in that. However, it is not permissible for him to forgive a debt she owed him and count it as expiation, because actions are judged by intentions, and because forgiving a debt is not an act of ownership transfer.

According to the majority of jurists, it is not permissible to pay the expiation in money; rather, it must be given in food.
