Regarding the whispers of showing off (riya'), the questioner is advised to ignore them and not pay attention to them. The fear of showing off is commendable, and one should not abandon acts of obedience because of it. Instead, one must strive against the self to correct the intention. The Hanafis have stated that a fragmented act of worship is not invalidated by sudden showing off if it was begun with sincerity, because it is considered purely for Allah from its inception, like prayer and fasting. Furthermore, showing off does not invalidate obligatory acts; the prayer of one who shows off is valid in terms of fulfilling the obligation, but he does not deserve reward for it. However, the fundamental reward is not lost, but rather its multiplication is lost. Therefore, one must strive against the self to get rid of these whispers.
