To what extent is the circulating narration authentic regarding the Makkah disbelievers’ request to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to split the moon, and their promise to believe if he did, and the subsequent events such as the splitting of the moon and seeing Hira between its two halves, and their saying: “Muhammad has bewitched us,” followed by their anticipation of the testimony of the desert dwellers, and the revelation of the Quranic verses: “The Hour has approached, and the moon has split. And if they see a sign, they turn away and say, ‘Continuous magic’”?
