How is the non-destruction of the disbelievers of Quraysh after their rejection of the miracle of the splitting of the moon reconciled with the noble verse: "And nothing prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamūd the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged by her. And We do not send the signs except as a warning"?

The "signs" (ayat) in the verse: (And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them) refer to the specific signs that the polytheists proposed and requested. They do not refer to the general signs that demonstrate the truthfulness of the messengers, which Allah establishes initially without any request from the polytheists. This is because granting the polytheists their proposed signs could lead to their destruction if they disbelieved in them, as happened to previous nations.

The splitting of the moon was a great sign of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and it was not a specific proposal from the polytheists. It occurred at night, and not everyone saw it. This was a mercy from Allah upon this Ummah, out of fear that they would be destroyed if they disbelieved in a general, perceptible sign, as previous nations disbelieved.
