Were the two boys mentioned in Surat Al-Kahf brothers, given Allah's saying, "And their father was righteous"?

It appears that the two boys mentioned were brothers, and their father was righteous. So, Allah preserved them due to his righteousness, even if they themselves were not righteous. The benefit of the story is that Allah preserves His righteous servant in himself and his offspring. It has been narrated that He preserves up to seven generations of his offspring, and this is indicated by Allah's saying: "Indeed, my protector is Allah, who has sent down the Book, and He takes care of the righteous."
