Is hearing news and relaying it to one's wife considered backbiting? Is it permissible to inquire and seek the truth? Is memorizing the Holy Quran futile and without benefit?

Memorizing the Holy Quran is a communal obligation (fard kifayah), while memorizing Al-Fatiha is an individual obligation (fard ayn) upon every Muslim. Many texts have been narrated concerning the virtue of memorizing the Quran, such as the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "The best among you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it," and his saying: "The one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble and righteous scribes (angels)." And "The people of the Quran are the people of Allah and His chosen ones," and "It will be said to the companion of the Quran: 'Recite and ascend and recite as you used to recite in the worldly life.'" The term "companion of the Quran" here refers to the one who has memorized it by heart.

Warning Muslims against evil and advising them is not among the forbidden backbiting (gheebah), and it is permissible for a husband to warn his wife. However, the warning must not be based on suspicions and doubts, for it is not permissible to accuse a Muslim without certainty, due to Allah's saying: "O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy," and the Prophet's saying, peace be upon him: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech. And do not spy, nor inquire about others' secrets." It is not permissible to spy or follow up on news to verify it if it is merely suspicions, unless the person is known for open transgression and declares it. In that case, warning against him is not considered backbiting. And the saying "If a fasiq (transgressor) comes to you with news, verify it" is a Quranic verse, not a hadith.
