Does a person sin if they stop eating, intending to die, to alleviate the burden on their poor relatives and escape the humiliation of begging, especially if they have lost their children and there is no one left who needs them?

The Wise Lawgiver (Allah) commanded the preservation of health and permitted the good things from sustenance to strengthen the body for obedience. He also threatened those who kill themselves with the severest of warnings. Allah Almighty said: "And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. And whoever does that in aggression and injustice – then We will drive him into a Fire." Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to stop eating, whatever the motive, because that exposes him to a great torment. Rather, one must fear Allah and seek a means of livelihood that is pleasing with what Allah has decreed.
