How did the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, braid his hair, and did he tie it back and braid it?

The length of the Prophet's hair (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) varied. Sometimes it was above the "wafrah" (hair reaching the earlobes) and below the "jummah" (hair reaching the shoulders), and sometimes it reached his earlobes or between his earlobes and his shoulders. It might even reach his shoulders. If his hair grew long, he would braid it into four plaits. Growing hair long is not among the sunnahs for which a Muslim is rewarded; rather, it is a custom that varies with time and place. If the custom in a particular place or time dictates that long hair is exclusive to women, or if it becomes a sign of immoral people, then it is not permissible for men to grow their hair long.
