How can I love for my excelling fellow students what I love for myself in terms of success and excellence, while striving to achieve the highest ranks?

The meaning of the Hadith "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself" is, in essence, loving good for one's brother and warding off evil from him. There is no harm in a person loving to surpass others in virtues and merits, and this does not contradict the Hadith. Indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, denied that a person's dislike of being surpassed by another in beauty constitutes arrogance or oppression. The perfection is to love for them exactly what you love for yourself.
