Is draping layers considered an adornment? Is it permissible to wear a khimar made of transparent foulard fabric? And is covering the face obligatory or commendable?

For a woman's attire in front of non-mahram men, it is stipulated that it be wide and loose, not describing or revealing, and not being an adornment in itself. It should serve to conceal adornment and prevent temptation. Adornment is divided into two types: apparent, which refers to ordinary clothing that is unavoidable, and hidden, which is not to be displayed except to mahrams.

As for the head covering (khimar), it is stipulated that it cover the bosom and chest, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿AND LET THEM DRAW THEIR HEAD-COVERINGS OVER THEIR BOSOMS﴾ [An-Nur/31]. It must also not be transparent, because transparent material does not achieve concealment; rather, it is an adornment in itself.

It is obligatory for a woman to cover her entire body from non-mahram men, including the face and hands, according to the majority of jurists.
