Does one sacrificial animal in Hajj al-Tamattu' suffice for two people, or is a separate sacrificial animal required for each pilgrim?

Scholars differed regarding the ruling on sharing in the sacrificial animal (hady). Some, like the Malikis, prohibited it absolutely, while others, like many of the people of knowledge, permitted it. Abu Hanifa restricted it to cases where some of them did not intend proximity (to God) and consecration (ihram). The preponderant opinion is the permissibility of sharing in camels and cattle absolutely, and a sheep suffices for only one person.
