Which is better: to perform many supererogatory acts of obedience, or to abandon sins while performing few supererogatory acts, after fulfilling the obligatory duties?

Abandoning sins while performing a few supererogatory acts is better than performing many supererogatory acts, because abandoning sin is obligatory, unlike supererogatory acts which are recommended. Some scholars have stated that a prohibition is more stringent than a command, and that abandoning forbidden acts is better than performing supererogatory acts of obedience. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz said: "Piety is not the standing in prayer at night, nor fasting during the day, nor mixing things up in between! Rather, piety is performing what Allah has enjoined and abandoning what Allah has forbidden."
