Justice between wives in terms of lodging is obligatory when residing [at home]. When traveling, the preponderant opinion is that he should not travel with one of his wives except by drawing lots or by mutual consent, and this is the of the Shafi'is and Hanbalis.
If one of the wives is ill, lots are not drawn, and if the husband travels with another [wife], he is not obligated to compensate the sick wife for the duration of the journey, nor is he obligated to compensate the wives who stayed behind after his return.
However, if he travels and stays for a period, he must compensate the other wife for the duration of his stay. If he stays in a town for a period exceeding twenty-one prayers, he must compensate for the entire duration of his stay, because he has ceased to be considered a traveler. If he intends to reside permanently, he must compensate for the duration of his stay, no matter how short.
The husband's travel with his children from one of his wives does not affect the division [of time] between the wives.
