Is a husband permitted to prevent his wife from going out unless she is accompanied by his mother, out of jealousy? And is his not involving her in financial dealings, despite his fulfilling all her every need, considered a shortcoming in her rights? And is he permitted to refrain from speaking with her family while urging her to maintain ties with them, even though they do not like him?

It is the husband's right to prevent his wife from leaving except with his permission, or with his mother, to prevent the foolishness of the foolish. He must provide for her maintenance and housing. He is not obligated to teach her how to deal with the bank or the ATM, and she should thank Allah that her husband bought her necessities. The husband should treat his wife's family kindly, but if they mistreat him and incite his wife against him, he may stop visiting them. It is not permissible for the wife's family to incite her to divorce, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not one of us who incites a woman against her husband." Nor is it permissible for her to respond to them and seek divorce, for he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Any woman who asks her husband for a divorce without any legitimate reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her."
