If the fetus is expelled before human features are discernible (less than 81 days), the blood discharged is considered vitiated blood (dam fasad) and does not preclude prayer or fasting. However, if human features are discernible, it is postpartum bleeding (dam nifas). The prophetic traditions indicate that human formation does not begin before eighty days. Therefore, if the fetus is 42 days old when expelled, the blood is vitiated blood, and the woman must take precautions and perform ablution for each prayer.
