Is it necessary to inform the children of a deceased husband that he had to fast a great deal due to engaging in sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan, in order to clear one’s conscience, or should one remain silent about the matter?

Whoever dies while owing a debt to Allah or to a human being, the debt is to be paid from his estate before its division. The obligatory expiations (kaffarat) due from the deceased must be paid from his estate. If this does not happen, the heirs must be informed so that each of them pays their share of the expiations. The obligatory expiation for him is feeding sixty poor people for each day he engaged in intercourse, with each poor person receiving 750 grams of rice. It is permissible to give the expiation for two or more days to the same poor people, or his guardians may fast on his behalf for two consecutive months for each day he engaged in intercourse. It is permissible for the wife to pay the expiation on his behalf without informing the heirs.

As for the wife, there is a difference of opinion regarding the obligation of expiation upon her. The safer approach is for her to fast for two consecutive months for each day she engaged in intercourse willingly and voluntarily. If she is unable to do so, then she must feed sixty poor people for each day. And increase your supplications for this man seeking forgiveness (istighfar).
