How is inheritance divided among a wife and two daughters?

If the deceased left behind only a wife and two daughters, the wife receives one-eighth due to the presence of a lineal descendant, as Allah Almighty said: "But if you have a child, then for them is one-eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt." The two daughters receive two-thirds, based on what has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and upon which there is scholarly consensus. The remainder is returned to the two daughters. Thus, the inheritance is divided into sixteen shares: the wife receives two shares, and each daughter receives seven shares, by way of both obligatory share and return. We emphasize that matters of inheritance are serious and complex, and a mere fatwa is insufficient. Rather, they must be referred to Sharia courts to investigate the possible existence of other heirs, bequests, debts, or rights that take precedence over the rights of the heirs.
