Is it permissible for a sick person who is taking an intoxicating medication to pray?

The basic principle regarding narcotic medications is that they are impermissible unless absolutely necessary for treatment and no alternative is available, and only in the dosages prescribed by physicians.

As for the validity of the prayer of someone who has taken narcotic medications, there are two cases:

1. If they are unconscious or do not fully comprehend their words and actions: Their prayer is invalid until they regain full consciousness, based on the Almighty's saying: "O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are in a drunken stupor until you know what you are saying."

2. If they fully comprehend their words and actions: Their prayer is valid. Scholars have explicitly stated the validity of the prayer of one who understands what they are saying, even if they have consumed an intoxicant.
