Is it permissible for a Muslim to sacrifice himself for a disbeliever if that is the only way to save him?

An innocent life, whether Muslim or non-belligerent disbeliever, must be saved from perdition. This includes interrupting prayer to save a drowning person or the like. This salvation is conditional upon the ability to perform it. If it is highly probable that an attempted rescue will lead to the rescuer's demise, then it is forbidden for him to do so, based on the Almighty's saying: "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction." A person is not permitted to prioritize others in a way that leads to his own destruction, such as drowning to save a drowning person, or giving his food to someone in dire need while he himself is in dire need of it, because a person is commanded to preserve his own life first.
