Is it permissible to study psychology and law and obtain an academic degree in them?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible for a Muslim to study psychology and law on the basis of adopting the falsehoods they contain, for they are founded on other than Allah's law. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade looking into the books of the People of the Book. However, if a Muslim is intellectually and عقيديا qualified to distinguish truth from falsehood in them, it is permissible for him to study them; in fact, it may sometimes be obligatory for him to do so, in order to refute the misconceptions arising from them, especially if it is by assignment from the ruler. The Permanent Committee also recommended this for those who are capable of distinguishing between truth and falsehood, provided that it does not distract them from what is more obligatory in Islamic law.
