What is the ruling regarding someone who swore an oath by divorce that he would not watch pornographic films, or go near them, or download European satellite channels, then broke his oath? And does the divorce occur according to the number of types of acts in which he broke his oath, or is it a single divorce? And does anything occur if he watches them via the Internet instead of television? And what are the implications of this oath if there is doubt as to whether it was uttered aloud or was merely a thought?

Nothing deters the soul from sins like the mindfulness of Allah the Almighty, the feeling that He knows what is secret and even more hidden, and reminding it of the threat of Allah's punishment. Whoever swears to abandon a sin must avoid breaking his oath, because abandoning sin is originally an obligation. Swearing by divorce with the intention of preventing oneself from doing something, not with the intention of divorce, results in divorce according to the majority of scholars if the sworn-upon act occurs, and some say that only an expiation for the oath is required. If one swears concerning several things connected by the conjunction "wa" (and), then breaking the oath regarding one of them breaks the oath entirely. Breaking the oath by watching obscene films is the same whether one watches them on the internet or on television, as there is no difference between them. Whoever doubts whether he swore or not does not have his wife divorced if he breaks the doubtful oath, because marriage is established with certainty and is not removed by doubt. Swearing and divorce do not occur by mere intention or self-talk; rather, it is necessary to utter them verbally. We fear for you, dear questioner, that you may be afflicted with obsessive doubts (waswas), so it is obligatory for you to turn away from all of this and to ward off these whispers from yourself, because indulging in them is a great door to evil and corruption.
