To what extent is the following Hadith Qudsi authentic: "O son of Adam, I created you for worship, so do not play; and I allotted for you your sustenance, so do not toil. If you are content with what I have allotted for you, I will bring ease to your heart and body, and you will be praised by Me. But if you are not content with what I have allotted for you, then by My might and majesty, I will unleash the world upon you, so you will chase after it like wild beasts in the wilderness, yet you will not have in it except what I have allotted for you, and you will be dispraised by Me"?

The well-known Hadith Qudsi, "I created you for worship, so do not play," is not a prophetic hadith and is not found in the books of Sunnah. Rather, it is transmitted from the books of Banu Isra'il (Children of Israel), and some have mistakenly attributed it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Kathir, and al-Abshihi all referred to it as being from the traditions of Banu Isra'il or the Torah. Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen ruled it to be "unauthentic." It is superseded by another authentic hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, elevated (to the Prophet): "Indeed, Allah Almighty says: 'O son of Adam! Devote yourself to My worship, I will fill your heart with richness and relieve your poverty. If you do not, I will fill your hands with preoccupation and will not relieve your poverty.'"
