Is it permissible for the family—brothers and cousins—to gather and eat together during seasons and holidays (such as Mawlid and Ashura)? And what is the ruling on one who does so after having memorized the Qur’an?

Visiting one another and gathering with relatives on religious holidays and joyous occasions increases love and strengthens ties. However, it is necessary to avoid the mixing of men and women or being lenient with non-mahram relatives, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Beware of entering upon women… the in-law is death." As for celebrating the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid), Ashura, or other days and designating them as holidays, it is an innovation (bid'ah), for there are only two holidays in Islam: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. As for expressing joy and happiness and gathering with family to celebrate someone who has completed memorizing the Qur'an, there is no harm in it, as long as it is not made into an annual holiday. This action is preferable for encouraging children to solidify their memorization.
