Is there a hadith that prohibits wearing black hats?

If hats are specific to disbelievers, then it is not permissible to wear them; otherwise, it is permissible. Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen was asked about the ruling on wearing the "burnaita" or the hat worn by young people, and he replied that the basic ruling for wearing it is permissibility, unless it is a custom of Christians or disbelievers. If it is, then it is forbidden, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them," or if the wearer intends to imitate disbelievers in his heart. The ruling does not change based on the color of the hat; it is permissible for a man to wear a head covering of black color, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) wore a black turban.
