What is the authenticity and meaning of the Hadith: "Do not wear black, for it is the clothing of Pharaoh," and who reported it?

The statement mentioned has no basis in the books of Sunnah, and has not been found attributed to scholars. It is attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, in some books of the people of innovation (Ahl al-Bid'ah). Authentic hadiths contradict it; it is narrated in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed the people while wearing a black turban. The fact that black clothing is a symbol of the people of innovation necessitates avoiding it, and even if it is permissible, it is not recommended. If it is a known symbol of the people of innovation, then avoiding it is more appropriate.
