What is the ruling on wearing black in Islam, and does it constitute imitation of the people of innovation?

Wearing black garments is permissible, as long as it is not for fame (libās shuhra) or with ill intent. It has been authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Mothers of the Believers wore black garments. In Sahih Muslim, it is stated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wore a black turban. Umm Salama also mentioned that the women of the Ansar used to wear black clothes after the verse of hijab was revealed.
