What is the ruling on wearing black for men?

There is no harm in men wearing black, as long as it is not a garment of fame (libas ash-shuhra), or if the wearer does not intend to imitate disbelievers or innovators, or if a man does not wear it to imitate women and the like. If it is free from these intentions, then there is no harm in it, due to what was narrated from 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went out one morning wearing a patterned cloak made of black hair." And from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enter on the Day of the Conquest of Mecca wearing a black turban." However, if the wearer intends any of the forbidden purposes, then it is forbidden for him due to that intention.
