Is it permissible, from a Sharia perspective, to undergo a surgical procedure to increase the size of the calves using fat from other parts of the body to achieve balance and beauty, knowing that there is a difference of opinion among doctors regarding its medical permissibility?
Cosmetic procedures are divided into two types: permissible, if they are for the removal of a birth defect or a disfigurement resulting from accidents or diseases, which is what the has permitted. The second type, however, is forbidden, and includes procedures performed to enhance beauty or improve appearance, such as nose reduction or facelifts, due to their involvement in altering Allah's creation, deception, and the unnecessary exposure of 'awrah (private parts).
If the purpose of the surgery is to restore balance to the legs, by increasing their fat to match the other, or if the thinness is severe and causes a visible defect, or a medical condition, or hinders movement, then this is permissible. However, if the thinness is normal and does not cause harm, surgery for cosmetic purposes is not permissible. A trustworthy doctor must be consulted before proceeding with the surgery. If the doctor deems that there is no benefit or a possibility of harm, then it is not permissible to perform it. In case of differing opinions among doctors, the opinion of the most knowledgeable and trustworthy should be followed, and one should not rush into the procedure unless it is favored by trustworthy doctors.
