What is the ruling on one who does not speak to his father due to the latter's ill-treatment, forbidden relationships, dereliction of duties, and repeated divorces of his mother; who does not inquire about or visit his paternal aunts who mistreat his mother, yet greets them on the street; who does not speak to colleagues at work due to problems, despite harboring no malice; who does not pray, claiming that Allah will not accept his prayer because he does not perform the five daily prayers in the mosque and because he severs ties of kinship; and who does not speak to some people because they wronged him and he has not forgiven them?
Whoever is overwhelmed by worries should resort to Allah, review themselves, repent, and do good deeds. One must treat parents kindly and not abandon them, no matter what sins they commit. Allah has commanded good companionship with them, even if they enjoin shirk (polytheism). Allah Almighty said: (But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness.) Family problems do not justify abandonment. Connection and forgiveness are more beloved to Allah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (If you are as you have said, then it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will always have a supporter from Allah against them as long as you persist in that.) A Muslim must be patient, overlook, and forgive in their actions. Abandoning prayer and having a bad opinion of Allah are two major sins that destroy one's religion. Therefore, one must review their affairs, repent to Allah, rectify what they have corrupted, maintain prayer, and supplicate frequently.
