How can the eternity of the dwellers of Paradise and Hell, "abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure," be reconciled with the folding up of the heavens and the earth on the Day of Resurrection, "the Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] scroll"? And if the first verse refers to the grave, how can there be eternity in it?

It is probable that "as long as the heavens and the earth endure" refers to the genre, because there will be heavens and earth in the Hereafter, as confirmed by the Almighty's saying: "On the Day when the earth will be changed to other than the earth, and the heavens as well." Al-Hasan al-Basri interpreted this verse to mean the existence of new heavens and earth, while Ibn Abbas said that every Paradise has a heaven and an earth, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam said: as long as the earth is earth and the heaven is heaven.
