The question

Are the intermittent yellowish and brownish discharges that precede the flow of blood, as well as the intermittent blood that is followed by dryness, considered part of menstruation? And what is the ruling on a husband having intercourse during the intervening hours of purity? And are the days during which blood, brownish, or yellowish discharges appear intermittently after the clear flow of blood, and before complete dryness, considered part of menstruation? And has the duration of menstruation thereby increased to become eight days or more?

The answer

The yellow discharge (ṣufrah) that precedes blood is not considered menstruation. As for blood itself, it is menstruation in all cases if it occurs within the possible period. If a woman sees only yellow or brownish discharge (kudrah) before blood, it is not considered menstruation. However, if she sees blood, then she is menstruating and must refrain from prayer and whatever else is prohibited for a menstruating woman until the blood ceases, along with any connected yellow or brownish discharge. Acts of worship performed during an intervening period of purity are valid, and there is no harm in marital intimacy. Any blood seen after that is considered menstruation, as is any yellow or brownish discharge connected to it. Purity is not confirmed except by seeing dryness or the white discharge (al-qaṣṣah al-bayḍāʾ). Everything that occurs within the possible period of menstruation is considered menstruation, whether the duration of the customary period increases or decreases.
