Is it permissible to obey a mother who prevents her daughter from traveling to her husband, and who is hostile towards the daughter's husband, demanding that she not communicate with him and sever her relationship with him, and who describes her daughter with the most terrible descriptions for unconvincing reasons, knowing that obeying the mother means the daughter's unhappiness?
Obeying the husband is one of the most obligatory duties after obeying Allah and His Messenger, and it takes precedence over obeying one's mother and father. Therefore, the wife must travel to her husband if he requests it, and her mother's anger in this situation is not to be considered. The wife must be patient with her mother's ill-treatment and deal with her with forgiveness and clemency, while being good to her and showing her courtesy without disobeying Allah, and without revealing the secrets of her home. She must also maintain ties of kinship with her brothers and sisters even if they sever them, because the true maintainer of kinship is one who connects with those who cut him off. As for suicide, it is one of the major sins and leads to greater misery in the hereafter.
