The question

Is the interest of preserving the sanity of a husband afflicted with temporary insanity – who divorced his wife three times during his periods of lucidity and whose doctor attested that he would inevitably suffer from insanity if he left his wife – given precedence, thus allowing him to return to his wife despite the third divorce, or is the interest of preserving honor given precedence, and the wife considered irrevocably divorced by the third divorce?

The answer

If a triple divorce has occurred, the wife becomes irrevocably separated from him and is not lawful for him until she marries another husband out of genuine desire, and then he dies or divorces her. It is not permissible for her to remain with him out of fear for his sanity, because his conjugal relations with her would constitute zina (fornication/adultery). Efforts must be made to guide him towards (Islamic exorcism/healing).
