Do the Hanafis stipulate the mere continuation of life in the animal after electric stunning for the slaughtered animal to be lawful, and does this entail the lawfulness of meat in the West? And what is the saying of Ibn Uthaymin regarding the lawfulness of slaughtered animals in America?

The Hanafis hold that the presence of even a faint or clear sign of life is sufficient to render lawful an animal that has fallen from a height, been strangled, beaten to death, or similar, provided it is slaughtered according to Islamic rites. This is the fatwa adopted by them, based on the words of Allah: {unless you slaughter it [in the prescribed manner]}. Abu Yusuf and Muhammad differ with them on the details of this. Ibn Abidin opines that anything slaughtered while still having life is permissible to eat. As for the slaughtered animals of the People of the Book, the general rule is that they are lawful. However, if it is known that they use electric stunning or shooting, then eating them is not permissible.
