Is it possible that paganism was originally monotheistic religions that were distorted, similar to what happened to Christianity, based on the statement of specialists that pagans believe in one God who incarnated in other beings, thus becoming divine?

The origin of humanity is monotheism and guidance, and deviation from that is incidental. Adam and his descendants were upon monotheism. Polytheism emerged among Noah's people after ten centuries. Allah Almighty says: "Mankind was one single nation, and Allah sent forth Prophets as bearers of good news and as warners" (Al-Baqarah/213). Muslim narrated from Iyad bin Himar that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, I created all My servants as upright monotheists, but then the devils came to them and deviated them from their religion." The polytheists worshipped their deities, believing that they would bring them closer to Allah or intercede for them with Him, or that they were images of righteous people or angels. No one among the ancients has ever asserted the existence of two equal lords. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "No human being has ever adopted the belief in two lords for the universe." Thus, the origin of people is monotheism, and polytheism is an incidental matter. The religion of Allah is Islam, and it is the religion of all prophets and messengers.
