How did the worship of idols and creatures—like sun worship—spread, and how did forms of worship and religions diverge, despite the fact that creation began with monotheism upon the descent of Adam, peace be upon him?

After the descent of Adam (peace be upon him), humanity remained upon monotheism for ten centuries, between Adam and Noah. Then, polytheism began to creep in among them due to ignorance and exaggerated veneration of righteous people. The exegetes mentioned that the names of the idols mentioned in Surah Nuh (Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, Nasr) belonged to righteous men. After their death, Satan inspired their people to make statues of them to remember them, and they did not worship them initially. However, after that generation passed, Satan inspired the subsequent generations that their ancestors used to worship them, so they worshipped them instead of Allah. This occurred at the time of the advent of Noah (peace be upon him).
