The answer

Uways al-Qarani was an ascetic Tabi'i and one of the masters of the awliya' (saints). He was born and raised in Yemen. He lived during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and embraced Islam, but he did not meet him due to his preoccupation with honoring his mother. It is narrated in Muslim on the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, advised seeking forgiveness from him.

Statements attributed to him also indicate his asceticism and fear of Allah, such as his saying: "O Allah, I apologize to You for every hungry liver and naked body, and I possess nothing but what is on my back and in my belly," and his saying: "Be in the command of Allah as if you have killed all people." It is said that his death occurred on the Day of Siffin in 37 AH, where he fought alongside Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, and was martyred there.
