What is the ruling on supplicating against oneself for death or harm, and will the supplication for a long life be answered for expiation of sins after a previous supplication for death?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade supplicating against oneself, one's children, and one's wealth, especially if it stems from discontent or a desire for death. This is because angels say 'Ameen' to what is uttered, and it signifies a lack of contentment with Allah's decree. Furthermore, despairing of Allah's mercy is among the most dangerous matters. Therefore, the questioner must seek forgiveness and repent to Allah, for repentance erases what came before it, and Allah forgives all sins and answers the supplications of those who repent. Some scholars have gone to the extent of saying that supplicating against oneself in a state of anger and distress is considered idle talk (laghw) for which Allah does not hold one accountable, out of His kindness and mercy towards His servants. Therefore, the questioner's supplication against herself will not be answered, Allah willing, and she must repent and ask Allah for pardon, well-being, and a long life in obedience.
