How does the penitent know that God has accepted his repentance, and are there signs or indications of that? And is seeing the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a dream always truthful, and are there specific signs that indicate its truthfulness? And are there signs or miracles that occur as proof of the acceptance of supplication or repentance or seeing the Prophet (peace be upon him), and what is the authenticity of what is narrated concerning that?

The scholars have mentioned signs for the acceptance of repentance, among them: that the repentant person be better after repentance than he was before it; that fear of Allah's cunning remains with him; that his heart be filled with remorse and fear commensurate with the offense; and that his heart experience a special brokenness that only a sinner feels, a brokenness that humbles the heart before the Lord with submission and awe. As for the signs of the acceptance of prayer (du'a), some are not necessary, such as the trembling of limbs, and some are irrational, such as seeing the dead while awake, or seeing a child from whom fire emanates.
