Is it necessary to see the deceased's face after washing and shrouding, and before burial, or is that a custom that has no basis in Islamic law?

A Shariah obligation cannot be decreed except with evidence from the Quran or the Sunnah.

It is mentioned in the Sunnah that it is permissible to uncover the face of the deceased without it being obligatory or recommended; rather, it is merely permissible.

Scholars have differed on this matter. Some have restricted it, prohibiting the uncovering of the face except for the washer and those immediately assisting him.

Jurists have explicitly stated the permissibility of uncovering the face of the deceased to refute the opinion of those who prohibit it. They did not consider it among the recommended or commanded acts. They supported their view with authentic hadiths that indicate the permissibility of entering upon the deceased, uncovering their face, and kissing them, whether before or after shrouding.
