What is the practical application of the greeting of peace at the conclusion of the funeral prayer, and what is the legal ruling on lowering the right hand when greeting to the right and the left hand when greeting to the left?

Most scholars believe that the taslim (salutation) in the funeral prayer is to be performed once, citing the practice of six Companions and the majority of the Salaf (early Muslims). Al-Jawzajani reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a single taslim for the funeral prayer. Imam Ahmad held that a single taslim is preferable, and that there is no differing opinion on this matter except from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i. However, Imam Al-Shafi'i and the jurists of Ahl al-Ra'y (people of opinion) believe that two taslims are recommended by analogy with other prayers.

The recommended wording for the taslim is "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah" to the right, and "Assalamu alaykum" alone is sufficient. As for lowering the right hand to the right and the left hand to the left when performing the taslim, there is no evidence from the scholars to indicate its permissibility.
