Is it true that a man building a house for himself and his family earns no reward for it, as one preacher mentioned, citing a Hadith as evidence?

A Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends, except for what he puts into the earth—that is, into something that is not intended for the sake of Allah, or what exceeds his and his family's needs. Islam dislikes extravagance and excess in all things, and it forbids extravagance and exceeding limits in construction and its adornment.
