Is participating in the purchase and slaughter of a sheep to distribute among the poor for the sake of averting calamity a religious obligation, and does the sacrificial ram prevent misfortunes and calamities?

Performing good deeds and acts of righteousness, such as giving charity and feeding the poor, protects one from evil fates, afflictions, and ruinous events. This is permissible if the intention is to draw closer to Allah to avert calamity, but on condition that the act is free from corrupt beliefs, such as some people's notion that spilling blood repels the evil of jinn. It is more preferable to give money directly to the poor. This act does not avert calamity except by Allah's permission, and it is not obligatory.
