Is it permissible to fish for sport while consuming the catch?

The general rule regarding hunting is permissibility, except for a person in a state of ihram or within the Haram area, concerning land animals. However, fishing and other sea hunting are permissible for those in ihram and others. Hunting permissible animals with the intention of earning a livelihood or eating is permissible by scholarly consensus. Fishing for recreation and enjoyment, while still benefiting from the catch, is permissible.

If the purpose of hunting is solely for hobby and sport (frivolity and play) without the intention of benefiting from the catch, then the ruling shifts from permissibility to dislike (karahah), based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "Do not take anything containing a soul as a target." Many scholars have explicitly stated this.

However, if the purpose of hunting is for amusement and sport, yet the catch will still be utilized (such as eating it, selling it, or gifting it), then the dislike is removed, and hunting reverts to its original permissibility, because in this case, the hunting is not purely frivolous nor a destruction of its value.

Therefore, hunting in the scenario mentioned in the question is permissible and there is no harm in it, as long as benefiting from the catch is possible by eating it, selling it, or similar means.
