Is fishing with a rod for pleasure and food permissible?

There is no harm in fishing with a rod for food or for pleasure and consumption. What is prohibited is fishing for mere amusement and discarding the fish without eating it, due to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Whoever kills a sparrow for no reason, it will cry out to Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection, saying: 'O Lord, so-and-so killed me for no reason and did not kill me for benefit.'" And his saying: "No human being kills a sparrow or anything larger than it without a just cause, except that Allah will question him about it." He (the companion) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is its just cause?" He said: "He slaughters it and eats it, and does not cut off its head and throw it away." And fish are likewise.
