What is the minimum standard for accepting a spouse in cases where a suitable match is rare?

Compatibility in marriage is considered by the majority of scholars. The preponderant opinion is that the recognized compatibility lies in religion and character. Thus, a wicked person is not compatible with a chaste woman. Evidence for this is drawn from verses and Hadiths, including the Almighty's saying: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you," and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to you, then marry him." As for compatibility in worldly matters such as lineage, profession, and wealth, it is not a condition for the validity of the marriage; rather, it is a right for the woman and her guardians, which can be waived if they choose to do so. However, it is advisable to consider these aspects to avoid marital problems.
