Is avoiding listening to songs that are not accompanied by music a sign of piety or strictness?

Avoiding listening to songs devoid of musical instruments, without deeming them forbidden or compelling people to avoid them, is not considered extremism. This is because the ultimate ruling on such songs is permissibility, and there is no harm in forsaking what is permissible. This is further emphasized if the avoidance is for something more beneficial, or due to some scholars holding the opinion of their prohibition, in which case it is commendable piety (wara‘). As for blameworthy extremism, it is excessiveness in religion by prohibiting what is lawful or denouncing matters of permissible disagreement.
