Is it confirmed that Uwais al-Qarani was a Sufi because he was humble and wore patched wool garments, and is this considered an act of piety or a Sunnah?

Uwais al-Qarani was one of the greatest of the Tabi'in (generation succeeding the Companions). He was a devout worshiper, an ascetic, and a man of virtue. The attribution of wearing wool to him has not been authenticated, and the narrations mentioned in this regard have weak chains of transmission. Wearing wool is not an argument for one's virtue or an established Sunnah. Rather, it is among the matters that scholars have censured if intended for affectation or to feign asceticism, whereas the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions wore what was readily available to them without deliberate austerity unless necessitated by need.
